How Much Internet Speed Do You Need for IPTV?

Real bandwidth requirements for IPTV by resolution and connection count, how to test properly, how much data streaming uses, and which Canadian ISPs handle it best.

The honest answer is that almost every Canadian internet plan sold today is fast enough, and the number on your bill is rarely the problem. What causes trouble is the gap between that number and what actually reaches the device under your television.

Here are the real requirements, how to measure what you have, and what to do if the numbers disappoint.

Requirements by resolution

These are sustained figures, not peak. A connection that bursts to 50 Mbps and settles at 8 Mbps will not carry Full HD reliably.

The gap between required speed and actual bitrate is deliberate headroom. Video bitrate is variable, and a fast-moving hockey broadcast spikes well above its average during rapid motion. Without headroom, those spikes empty your buffer.

Multiply by simultaneous connections

Each simultaneous stream needs its own allocation. A three-connection household is not running one stream, it is running three.

Then add headroom for everything else in the house. Someone on a video call, a game console downloading an update, or a phone backing up photos all compete for the same pipe.

For a typical Canadian family running three streams plus normal household use, 100 Mbps is comfortable and 50 Mbps is workable if nothing else heavy is happening.

How to test properly

This is where most diagnosis goes wrong.

Test on the streaming device, not your phone. Install a speed test app on the Firestick, Android box or Smart TV. What your phone measures standing next to the router tells you nothing useful about a stick behind a television two rooms away.

Test where the device lives. Do not carry it to the router.

Test at the time you watch. Canadian cable internet is shared at the neighbourhood level, so a 2pm result and an 8pm result can differ by a factor of three.

Run it three times and take the lowest. You care about the floor, not the best case.

We have seen gigabit fibre plans deliver 12 Mbps to a Firestick in a basement corner. That is a Wi-Fi problem, and upgrading from gigabit to faster gigabit will not fix it.

Data usage

Canadian ISPs increasingly offer unlimited plans, but capped plans still exist, particularly in rural areas and on some satellite services.

A household watching four hours of Full HD daily uses roughly 240 GB a month. Two people watching simultaneously doubles it.

If you are on a capped plan, watch the FHD variants rather than 4K. On a typical living room television at typical viewing distance the difference is small, and the data saving is 60 percent.

For mobile data, Canadian rates make streaming expensive. An hour of Full HD on LTE is roughly 2 GB, which on many Canadian plans is a meaningful fraction of the monthly allowance.

Wi-Fi is usually the real bottleneck

Your plan speed is what arrives at the modem. What arrives at the device is a different number, and the gap is where problems live.

Use 5 GHz

The 2.4 GHz band has three non-overlapping channels and is shared with microwaves, cordless phones and every neighbouring network. In a Toronto or Vancouver apartment building you may be competing with forty other networks on the same frequency.

The 5 GHz band has far more channels and shorter range, which is an advantage indoors because your neighbours' signals do not reach you.

If your router presents both bands under one network name, split them so you can connect the streaming device explicitly to 5 GHz.

Wired beats wireless

A USB Ethernet adapter for a Firestick costs about $15 CAD and removes the entire category of Wi-Fi problems. If you can run a cable, do.

Consider mesh

For homes where the television is far from the router, a mesh system delivers far better throughput at range than a single router with a strong antenna. Two-node mesh systems start around $150 CAD.

Router position

Central, elevated, and out of a cabinet. Routers inside media cabinets behind a television are common and are a substantial signal penalty.

Canadian ISPs, in practice

From what our support desk sees, some patterns are consistent.

Fibre connections handle IPTV best. Bell Fibe, Telus PureFibre, SaskTel infiNET, Beanfield and Bell Aliant have symmetric bandwidth and no shared-node congestion. Customers on these rarely report evening-specific problems.

Cable is fine but congests. Rogers, Shaw, Vidรฉotron, Cogeco and Eastlink deliver good peak speeds on a shared neighbourhood node. Evening throughput can drop substantially in dense areas. This is not throttling, it is contention, and the practical fix is a wired connection so at least Wi-Fi is not compounding it.

Fixed wireless and satellite are marginal. Rural fixed wireless and Starlink can work, but latency and variability make live sports harder. SD and HD are usually fine, 4K frequently is not.

Nobody meaningfully throttles by protocol. IPTV traffic looks like ordinary HTTPS video. Consistent evening slowdowns are almost always contention rather than deliberate targeting.

If your speeds are inadequate

In order of cost-effectiveness:

  1. Connect to 5 GHz. Free, two minutes, often decisive.
  2. Reboot the router. Free, and consumer routers degrade measurably after weeks of uptime.
  3. Move the router. Free, out of the cabinet, central and elevated.
  4. Add a $15 Ethernet adapter. The single best value fix available.
  5. Drop from 4K to Full HD. Free, and the visual difference is smaller than the bandwidth difference.
  6. Raise the player buffer to three to five seconds. Free, and it absorbs variability.
  7. Add a mesh system. Around $150, worth it for large or awkward homes.
  8. Upgrade the plan. Last, because it is the only one with a recurring cost and it fixes nothing if the bottleneck is Wi-Fi.

Note that upgrading the plan is at the bottom. In our experience it is the first thing people do and the least likely to help.

The short version

For one Full HD stream you need 15 Mbps at the device. For a three-connection household mixing 4K and Full HD, 55 Mbps or more. Most Canadian plans clear this easily.

If you are having trouble, test on the device rather than the phone, switch to 5 GHz or Ethernet, and raise the player buffer before you consider paying your ISP more money.
