Why Your IPTV Guide Is Empty, and How to Fix It
A blank programme guide is the most common IPTV support ticket there is, and it is almost never a broken account. The six causes, in the order they actually occur, and the fix for each.

We run the support desk for a Canadian IPTV service, and buffering is roughly half of everything that comes in. Over several years the pattern has been consistent: about seven reports in ten turn out to be something in the home rather than something on our network.
That is not a deflection. It is useful information, because the fixes are things you can do in the next ten minutes rather than things you have to wait for someone else to do.
What follows is our internal triage order, which is to say the sequence that resolves the most cases in the least time.
The fix depends entirely on the pattern, and five seconds of observation saves an hour of guessing.
Constant buffering on every channel. Almost always bandwidth or Wi-Fi. Go to fixes one through four.
Buffering only on some channels. Usually a source-side problem or a bitrate mismatch. Go to fixes five and six.
Buffering only in the evening. Network congestion, either in your building or on the provider side. Fixes three, seven and nine.
Buffering only on one device. That device. Fixes two and eight.
A frozen frame rather than a spinner. Different problem entirely. That is usually the stream dropping rather than buffering, and it points at fix nine.
This is the single highest-yield fix and it takes two minutes.
The 2.4 GHz band is saturated in every Canadian apartment building. It has three non-overlapping channels, and it is shared with microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors and every neighbour's router. In a downtown Toronto or Vancouver building you may be competing with forty other networks on the same frequency.
The 5 GHz band has far more channels and much shorter range, which is exactly what you want. Range is a disadvantage outdoors and an advantage in an apartment, because your neighbours' signals do not reach you.
Most Canadian ISP routers broadcast both bands. Some combine them under one network name, which lets the device choose badly. If yours does, log into the router and split them into separate names, then connect your streaming device explicitly to the 5 GHz network.
Unglamorous and genuinely effective.
Fire OS and inexpensive Android boxes leak memory. After a week or two of uptime, available RAM drops to the point where the video buffer cannot be maintained. A reboot clears it.
Routers accumulate stale NAT table entries and DHCP leases. Consumer routers in particular degrade measurably after weeks of uptime.
Unplug both for thirty seconds, not just off and on. Then make it a weekly habit on the streaming device. This alone prevents a surprising share of what people report to us.
The number that matters is what the streaming device sees, not what your plan advertises and not what your phone measures standing next to the router.
Install a speed test app on the Firestick, Android box or Smart TV and run it where the device lives. We have seen a gigabit fibre plan deliver 12 Mbps to a Firestick in a basement corner. That is not an ISP problem and it is not our problem, but it will absolutely cause buffering.
What you need, sustained rather than peak:

Multiply by the number of simultaneous streams. A household running two Full HD streams and one 4K stream wants roughly 55 Mbps of real throughput.
If fix three showed a poor number, this is the permanent answer.
A USB Ethernet adapter for a Firestick costs about $15 CAD. Most Android boxes have a port already. Running a cable is inconvenient, and it also eliminates the entire category of problems above.
If a cable genuinely is not possible, powerline adapters are the next best thing, and mesh Wi-Fi is better than a single router with a weak signal at the far end of the house.
4K sports needs a sustained 25 Mbps and a device capable of decoding HEVC in hardware. Plenty of people are trying to run 4K on a connection or a device that cannot support it, and the result is buffering that looks like a service fault.
Most channels exist as 4K, FHD, HD and SD variants. Try the FHD version of the same channel. If it is flawless, you have your answer, and on a typical living room television at typical viewing distance the difference is smaller than people expect.
Default buffer settings are usually one second, which is too aggressive for a residential connection. Any brief network hiccup empties the buffer and you see a spinner.
In TiviMate, go to Settings, then Playback, and set the buffer to between three and five seconds. IPTV Smarters has an equivalent under player settings. You trade a slightly longer channel-change delay for a picture that holds through minor network variation.
This is the fix most people have never tried and it makes a large difference on marginal connections.
If everything is perfect at 2pm and unwatchable at 8pm, you have congestion rather than a fault.
Canadian cable internet is a shared medium at the neighbourhood level. When everyone on your node streams simultaneously, throughput drops regardless of what your plan says. Fibre connections, including Bell Fibe, Telus PureFibre, SaskTel infiNET and Beanfield, do not have this characteristic and customers on them rarely report evening-specific problems.
Run a speed test at 8pm and compare it to one at 2pm. If the evening number is dramatically lower, the fix is either a different internet plan or a wired connection that at least removes Wi-Fi from the equation.
If your speeds are consistent but streams still degrade in the evening, the congestion may be on the provider side, and that is worth reporting so your line can be moved to a different node.
Player apps accumulate cached guide data and thumbnails, and a corrupted cache produces behaviour that looks like a network fault.
On Fire TV, go to Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications, select your player, and choose Clear Cache. Clear Data will also remove your login, so note your credentials first. On Android TV the equivalent lives under Settings, Apps.
If clearing the cache does not help, uninstall and reinstall. This resolves a meaningful share of single-device problems.
If you have worked through everything above and the problem persists, it is likely on the provider side, and there is usually something they can do.
Most IPTV services run multiple server nodes. If your line is pinned to a node that is overloaded or has a poor route to your ISP, moving it fixes the problem instantly. This is not something you can do yourself and it is not something most providers do proactively.
When you contact support, give them:
A support desk receiving that message can act on it immediately. A message saying "it keeps buffering" produces the checklist you have already worked through.
Being straight about the limits.
If a channel is down at its source, no amount of routing work brings it back. We can switch to a different ingest for that channel and usually do within a few hours, but for that period the channel is unavailable and we will say so rather than blaming your equipment.
If your internet connection genuinely cannot sustain the bitrate, nothing on our side changes that. We can move you to lower-bitrate variants, which helps, but a 6 Mbps connection is not going to carry Full HD hockey.
If your Wi-Fi is the bottleneck, the fix is in your house. We can tell you that is what the diagnostics show, but we cannot run a cable for you.
